Scaffolding: Concept Review

The games that we considered were 'Getting Over It with Bennet Foddy' and 'Buckshot Roulette'.

We chose 'Getting Over It with Bennet Foddy' because of its simple control scheme. The only thing that controls the character is the mouse. Wherever you move the mouse is where the hammer is moved to, so all you would have to do for functionality is to figure out mouse movement. We think that this game would benefit from an alternative controller because it would make the game harder and more immersive. The game itself is a rage game so by making it harder through a controller that works functionally would actually improve the game in our opinion. The inquiry question that got us was physical gestures that are present in the game play, so in this case, moving the hammer around.

Do you think that the functionality of the controllers needs to be improved?

Do you think that the shape of the controllers accurately depict the theme?

For 'Buckshot Roulette' it has a very simple control scheme where it only involves clicking on different objects for what move you want to make. So in order to play the game you would have to create a controller that had accurate mouse movement and a way to click on different objects. We think that the game would benefit from these new controller concepts because it would immerse the player into the game much more. If the player was actually holding the gun it would make every decision way more impactful, especially if you had four of these controller concepts. The thing that motivated our choice was simple inputs again, as there are only clicking inputs to make decisions.
