Scaffolding: Concept Review

Final Team 3 - Concept Review

Game 1: League of Legends

https://www.leagueoflegends.com/en-us/

Our team was immediately insistent on using League of Legends as one of the games for our concepts. We both love the game and play it regularly, and it is a good candidate for specialized controllers as it has a large player base and is the largest MOBA in the world. The main mechanics of the game include clicking and making inputs with a keyboard in order to fight enemies in a 5v5 top-down pvp arena. Mouse and keyboard are great utilitarian devices for League's complex mechanics, but there is a space for creative controllers among the more casual player base, and certain input systems could potentially be beneficial for impaired individuals. Some designs were very obviously influenced by certain characters and items from the game, while others have a focus on more reliable inputs.

Questions:

What would be a more reliable method to select an input than using a switch without using a button?

Do motion controls make the game experience more fun?

Game 2: Geometry Dash

The other game our team decided on creating concepts for is Geometry Dash, since it's a fun rhythm game that could be improved with a dynamic dedicated controller. The main gameplay revolves around clicking or tapping the screen to make the player jump, avoiding obstacles that automatically approach the player to the beat of a song. This inspired us to create designs using motion controls and thematic devices, playing into the rhythm game and musical aspect.

Questions:

Does a cube make sense as a thematically consistent design for the controller?

Does a small and portable controller improve the experience of playing a simple game?
