Scaffolding: Concept Review

 Anna Grant and Karina Vazquez

We chose the online games Fire Boy and Water Girl and Puppy Fetch as the games we are considering to use for our project. When we began drawing up the concepts for our controllers we ran into the issue that both of these games are the same input wise, so we selected a third game to draw concept sketches for in order to not repeat controller ideas between the two games. The third game that we chose is called Fancy Pants. The first five sketches that we drew apply to both Puppy Fetch and Fire Boy and Water Girl, and the other five apply to Fancy Pants. The core mechanics of Fire Boy and Water Girl are moving left and right with either A & D on the key board or the left and right arrow keys, and W or the up arrow key to jump. W, A, & D control Water Girl and the Up, Right, & Left arrow keys control Fire Boy. P is used to pause the game. This game can be played alone, but it is intended for two people to play together and pass different levels together using different levers and buttons found in the game. We plan to use two different circuit boards to make two controllers, and have each tilt to move the characters left and right using the x-axis accelerometer. There is also a game that I have played that is similar to Fire Boy and Water Girl that uses voice to make the characters jump, and I had a blast with that mechanic, so we are planning to use the sound sensor to make the characters jump. We plan to use a lever to pause and un-pause the game. These same mechanics will be used with Puppy Fetch, which is a similar game, but is single player. You play as a puppy and your goal is to collect the stick that was thrown for you while picking up bones and avoiding cats. The circuit board will control the direction of the character just like Fire Boy and Water Girl, and the sound sensor will be used to make the puppy jump. Fancy Pants is similar to these two games, but it have more inputs and actions for the player to use while playing. Like the other two games, we would plan to use the circuit board to make the character move back and forth and the sound sensor to jump, but in this game you also have to open doors and crouch. We would use the y-axis on the circuit board to make the character crouch, and use the switch given to use in our kit to make the character open doors.

What changes could we make to our first controller idea to make it more compelling to the player?

Should we go for one of the current ideas that we have or should we look for something new?
