Prototype Review - Super Mario Kart Game Controller

My prototype consists of two parts: A steering wheel and a foot pedal. The chosen game for this controller is Super Mario Kart. The foot pedal section represents the acceleration. When you push your foot down on it, it pushes down a wooden dowel that will have a lit LED attached to it. When the LED gets closer to the photocell, it will send a signal to initiate the keyboard stroke associated with accelerating.

As for the handheld part of the controller, This will use the Circuit Playground's accelerometer. The accelerometer's Z axis rotation will determine which direction the kart will steer in the game. The thing I might add to this is a switch that allows you to turn off the circuit in case you need to edit or debug the code, and you don't want it to take over your computer.

Some questions I have about this design are:

1. How large should the handheld section of the controller be?

2. I am pretty confident with my skills on making things with cardboard/davey board. Should there be another material I should use besides these two things? I am open to painting it as well.
