Concept: Book Controller

My high-level concept for my game/game controller project is that I want to physically fuse playing a text adventure game with a physical Choose-Your-Own-Adventure book.

I grew up reading CYOA books, which share a lot of similarities with adventure games. As an inherently interactive and physical medium, I though it would be super cool to cross these two concepts together.

The game in particular I would like to control is ZORK!

ZORK! is an iconic text adventure game, and I just think controlling it with a book as if it were a CYOA book would just be the coolest thing ever. However, I also recognize that the structure of ZORK! might be challenging or even impossible to properly control using a book. I am open to suggestions of other text adventures, but I'm pretty attached to ZORK!. Either way, it's going to require a lot of research and planning to control it in a sensible way.

Let me show you my three ideas:

1) Choose Your Own Adventure                   2) Each Page a Command                       3) Each Page a scene

1) Detects open page                   2) Detects open page                      3) Detects finger touch

I will admit, the third idea doesn't enchant me as much as the first two ideas. Taking the physical, natural gesture of turning a page and detecting that gesture as input just seems too perfect to pass up. There are pros and cons to either option, and it may come down to what works best with the game after I break down and investigate all of the possibilities; but I am hoping to do option one.
