Scaffolding: Concept Review (Art of Rally)

 For my game controller project, I am going to create a controller for the Art of Rally. Released last year, Art of Rally is a stylized, arcade-esque driving game where you drive a collection of cars through different eras of rallying as you take on increasingly difficult stages and set the fastest times possible. Thanks to its arcade approach, compared to other racing games that qualify as simulators, it's possible to play through the game with WASD controls. I also picked this game for the same reason I enjoy rally games and rally driving in general: it's a challenge. You are driving a car tuned to it's highest settings, driving as fast as possible in every kind of road, whether it's gravel, dirt, in rain, and so on. Usually, you would use a steering wheel peripheral to fully simulate the experience, but I wanted to explore alternate control schemes, like motion controls, sound detection, use of potentiometers and whatever else, that gives an even greater challenge while either still preserving the simulation aspect of virtual rally racing or going through a more fantastical approach.

Art Of Rally

Controller 1 - Co-Driver Setup
In rally racing, you usually have a co-driver relay directions from a clipboard to you on the course in order to give you a heads-up on any jumps and turns before you actually hit them. There is no built-in co-driver in Art Of Rally, but this controller would simulate the experience of being a co-driver instead. Using a headset or any pair of headphones, you would use your voice to accelerate the car. The clipboard you carry would control the car's direction and braking by tilting the attached clipboard left, right and down, respectively. This simulates the swaying motions a co-driver will feel while in the passenger seat.



Controller 2 - Radio DJ
Rock out to the latest tunes while you're beating your best times! Use 2 potentiometers, one to control your direction dressed up as the tuner knob, one to control your acceleration and braking dressed up as the volume knob, and an AM/FM switch to use the handbrake.



Controller 3 - Use the Force
This controller will use an infrared detector that can be used to detect objects that are close. With the use of a potentiometer to turn the car, it will always be accelerating until you bring your hand up, stopping the car.
